Gold never loses its value, which makes it a safe investment if you want to shield your wealth from hyperinflation and unfavorable market conditions.
If you’re worried about the state of the economy, gold is the investment you need.
But buying this asset leads to the important question of where to hide gold at home.
Let’s consider some of the smartest and most creative ways to safely store gold on your property.
17 Places to Hide Your Gold in Plain Sight
Some of these hiding places are ‘oldies but goodies’ – the same spots people have been hiding their valuables for centuries, even millennia – and others are a little more modern.
Once you’ve decided on the perfect place (or places) to hide your valuables, be cautious. I don’t recommend sharing this information with anyone but your spouse.
You should also never share images of your gold and/or silver online.
1. Gardening Pots
Plant pots are one of the best places to stash gold and other valuables. Because of their low value and weight, they are unlikely to be stolen.
They can also be placed indoors and outdoors, and you can purchase various sizes depending on your needs.
The best method is to place your gold bars and valuables in the bottom of the pot and cover it with soil before adding your plants.
The obvious downside is that your gold will not be as easily accessible when you need it. However, you can also purchase garden pots with hidden removable compartments.
Examples to Consider:
2. Under Floorboards
Stowing valuables under the floorboards is a certified classic, and for good reason. If you have a loose floorboard in your home that can be safely dislodged, this is an ideal option.
Prioritize an area of the floor that is easiest to conceal with a rug or piece of furniture, and try not to pry floorboards loose.
If someone suspects you are hiding valuables in your home, they may look for crowbar marks and other signs that the floorboards have been tampered with.
3. Detergent and Laundry Boxes
Of all the areas in your home, thieves are probably least likely to look in your laundry room or bathroom for valuables.
Even better, your laundry powder and detergent boxes will pass under their nose unnoticed.
Buy a bulk box of laundry powder and place your gold bullion or coin rolls at the bottom before refilling it, like you would with the garden pots.
Don’t do this with bags of laundry powder as the irregular shape will be more noticeable.
4. Firewood Stacks
If you’re someone who is prepared for every situation, then you no doubt have a large stock of firewood throughout the year.
Since a well-stacked woodpile will have large gaps between each log, you can slip valuables in between these spaces and push them right to the back of the pile.
Make sure to add them near the bottom of the stack (and remember where you put them!).
5. In a Personal Safe
- UL fireproof, 1-hour protection at 1700ºF
- Waterproof, submerges up to 8 inches
- Biometric lock stores 10 fingerprints
Sometimes the best places to hide valuables are the most obvious ones.
A safe may not be as easy to hide, but it will be easier to keep thieves from stealing your gold once they find it.
Depending on your budget and preference, you can choose from large, heavy safes that will be difficult to transport, safes with biometric scanners, small safes that can be stowed away under floorboards, and more.
Examples to consider:
6. Fake Rocks
- Realistic rock design, blends in naturally
- Weatherproof, windproof, and secure cover
- Holds multiple keys, compact and discreet
Pot plants aren’t the only place in your backyard suitable for hiding valuables. Fake rocks are somewhat common products, usually used as ornaments to decorate and accent landscapes and gardens.
But you can also purchase fake rocks with hidden cavities that can be used to hide valuables in plain sight. Most of these products are small and so better suited to smaller valuables.
Examples to consider:
7. Stash Cans
- Authentic Spam can design and branding
- Secret safe for cash, jewelry, documents
- Fun gag gift, blends into pantry
Stash cans are discreet products designed to look identical to ordinary household items like cleaning products, beverage cans, aerosol cans, etc.
These cans can store small gold bars and coins in a way that will look innocuous to anyone who might be looking to steal your valuables.
Examples to consider:
8. Inside of Books
- Secure storage for handguns and valuables
- Key-locking system with backup key
- Compact dimensions for discreet storage
Books are worthy hiding places to consider if you have bookshelves in your home and don’t want to spend extra on stashing and concealment products.
To make your own stash book, you’ll need a disposal hardcover book, box cutters, sandpaper, and a water glue mixture. You can then use the box cutters to cut out sections of the pages to create a hollow space.
You then sandpaper down the edges and apply glue to seal them shut.
You can then store small bars of gold and gold coins inside the hollow. This method is great because bookshelves are one of the last places an intruder is likely to look.
You can also purchase fake books with built-in compartments, similar to stash cans.
Examples to consider:
9. False Bottom Drawer
Another classic place for hiding valuables is in a false bottom drawer.
A false bottom drawer is a drawer – usually a bedside table or dresser – with a false wooden panel tucked into the drawer.
The false panel will conceal valuables placed at the bottom.
False bottom drawers don’t need to be purchased, you can make them yourself with minimal supplies.
All you need is either cardboard and fabric or a thin piece of plywood to use as the bottom, a small length of ribbon to pull the panel out, and styrofoam pieces to help the panel fit.
10. Concealment Furniture
- Hidden compartment behind clock face
- Felt-lined space for valuables and handguns
- Classic design blends with home décor
I’ve already mentioned fake rocks, fake books, and stash cans, but the next step up for larger valuables is concealment furniture.
Concealment furniture is furniture specifically designed to conceal valuables in hidden compartments.
While this type of furniture is often used for gun storage, much of it can be used interchangeably to hide bullion, coins, etc.
Examples to consider:
11. In the Backyard
If you don’t want to purchase any products or supplies to set up a good at-home hiding place for gold, you still have options.
One of them is the tried and true old-school method of burying your gold in the backyard. After all, all you need is a shovel and a few square feet of space!
Make sure to place your valuables in a structurally sound, watertight container. Choose a location in your backyard that is not in your neighbor’s direct line of sight. And most important of all, don’t forget about your gold when you move out!
12. The Freezer
Keeping gold in the freezer is another old-school method. Every home has a freezer appliance, so it costs nothing to stow away your gold and silver there.
Just place your gold in waterproof, airtight packaging and keep it inside some old packaging, like a used ice cream container or frozen vegetable bag.
It’s unlikely anyone will look inside a freezer for valuables, but keeping them inside old packaging adds an extra layer of secrecy.
13. Pet Beds
If you’re confident in constructing and reconstructing furniture, consider hiding your gold in your cat and dog beds, if you have pets.
Many pet beds can be modified to contain several layers of storage, with the pet bed layer on top and the storage compartments below.
How much you can store will depend on the width and depth of the pet bed.
14. Litter Boxes
Speaking of pets, litter boxes are another super discreet and safe place to hide your valuables. While it might sound really off-putting to hide anything there, that’s why it’s such an excellent hiding place.
Just like the pet beds, it’s unlikely a home intruder will ever consider your pet’s litter box as a hiding place for valuables.
And you don’t have to hide your gold inside the litter either – similar to the false bottom drawer, you can hide your valuables in a separate compartment below the litter in a clean and hygienic space.
Examples to Consider:
15. False Drywall
Drywall is the construction material used to create most of our walls and ceilings.
If you are building or renovating parts of your home and want to create a seamless place to hide valuables, consider installing a removable wall panel or “false” drywall.
This allows you to stow large amounts of gold and other valuables in the extra space behind the drywall. If done correctly, the panel will be nearly impossible for intruders to spot.
16. Aquarium
If you have an aquarium or fish tank in your home this could be the perfect place to conceal some of your smaller valuables.
Before filling your aquarium with gravel and water, store your gold bars or coins in a watertight container and place it in the bottom of the tank.
You can then fill the tank with gravel. Consider placing some aquatic plants and aquarium ornaments on the spot directly over the gold for an extra layer of cover.
Examples to Consider:
17. Fishpond
On the topic of fish, if you also have a fishpond in your backyard this could be another canny place to stash your valuables.
No thieves or home intruders are going to wade into your fishpond in the hope that they might find something, so use that to your advantage.
There are several different ways you can use your fishpond to hide gold, whether you bury it underground in an empty pond before filling it with water, use weights to keep your storage container at the bottom of the pond or pin the package down at the edges of the pond with rocks and pebbles.
Just keep in mind that using a fishpond for this purpose will be a little messier than other ideas, as you’ll need to remember exactly where you stashed your gold, otherwise, things may get messy (and wet!)
